MFL

'One language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way.'

Frank Smith, Psycholinguist

At Shrivenham C of E Primary School, our chosen language is German. The children begin their language learning journey in Year 3 by exploring the basics of the German language, before moving on to learn more specific language techniques that could be applicable in other languages.

We teach the children a variety of different skills during our weekly MFL lessons. Throughout their time at Shrivenham C of E Primary School, the children will learn how to:

  • ask and answer questions
  • use correct pronunciation and grammar
  • memorise words
  • interpret meaning
  • understand basic grammar
  • use dictionaries
  • work in pairs and groups, and communicate in German
  • look at life in another culture

Languages around the school

At Shrivenham, we aim to provide the children with opportunities to:

  • explore another language in a way that is enjoyable and fun
  • become curious about different languages
  • be aware that language has structure, and that the structure differs from one language to another
  • develop their awareness of cultural differences in other countries
  • develop their speaking and listening skills
  • develop a foundation for future study
