    Games

    1. Ten Frames + Counters

    What you need:
    Tens frame (or draw one), coins/pasta/lego

    How to play:

    • Parent says a number (e.g. 6)
    • Child fills that many spaces
    • Child works out how many more to make 10

    ➡️ Extend to 20 or 100 using two frames or a 100 square.

    2. Target Number Throw

    What you need:
    2 dice (or number cards), paper

    How to play:

    • Roll two numbers
    • Add them
    • How far away from 10 (or 20) are you?
    • Say the bond out loud

    Example: “7 + 1 = 8, I need 2 more to make 10.”

    3. Make 10 / Make 20 Snap

    What you need:
    Number cards 0–10 (or playing cards, no pictures)

    How to play:

    • Turn over two cards
    • If they make 10 → SNAP!
    • First to say the full sentence wins:
      “7 and 3 make 10.”

    🔥 Extra challenge: make 20 or 100 using 3 cards.

    4. Part–Whole Build

    What you need:
    Lego bricks or cubes

    How to play:

    • Build a tower of 10
    • Snap off part of it
    • Child says:
      “The whole is 10, the parts are ___ and ___.”

    Games

    1. The Coin Exchange Game

    What you need:
    10p and 1p coins (or counters labelled T and O)

    How to play:

    • Build a number (e.g. 42 = 4 tens, 2 ones)
    • Try to subtract a number needing exchange (e.g. –18)
    • If you can’t take from the ones, exchange a ten

    🗣 Key language:

    “I can’t take 8 ones from 2 ones, so I exchange a ten.”

    2. Base-10 Subtraction Build

    What you need:
    Straws, bundles of 10, or lego sticks

    How to play:

    • Build the starting number
    • Physically remove what you are subtracting
    • When stuck, swap a ten for ten ones
